Unfortunately CCCU refused to field their 3rd XV against ours, and don’t have a 4th XV so these games are not going ahead this year, but there will be some sort of exhibition match.

University of Kent Men’s 3rd v London Met Uni Men’s 1st

It was a wet, cold and grey day as the Kent men’s 3rds travelled to London to attempt to stretch their win streak to four in a row. Kick off was scheduled at 2:20 pm with Kent receiving.

Immediately London Met’s lack of discipline leads to several penalties. One allows a medium range attempt at goal, which Patrick slots to take the lead to 0-3 after 5 minutes. The possession for the first 10 mins was all Kent’s resulting in new winger Dom, now nicknamed ‘tank’ Dom, crashing through their centres after several lineouts going Kent’s way. Pat successfully converted. 0-8 the score.

The second try came 20 mins later when a down the line play finds Miles on the wing with a bit of space. A cheeky grubber kick unluckily bounces out, but the result is a lineout for London on their 5m line. A great steal by the pack allows the backs to link, releasing pat through a gap, who offloads to Mosse to score between the posts, subsequently converted making it 0-17.

Greater pressure from London Met leads to Kent defending in their 22 for several minutes. Mat Jones unfortunately gets injured meaning a shuffle of the back line, as pat drops into fly-half and Louis goes 13. The London Met pack then put a quick series of play together to score in the corner, but were unsuccessful in converting. Score at 5-17.

The third try came on the 40min mark after a dominating period by the pack. A stolen scrum in the opponents 22 allows the backs to run at London met. A lucky ‘flair’ pass by pat allows Mosse to crash over the line for his second. Conversion brings score to 5-24 at half time.

The second half started very positively as new sub Christian reeks havoc with the opposition. A counter attack sees him running 50 yards up the pitch, pretty much through their entire pack. This leads to Pat and ‘tank’ Dom to link allowing Dom to score in the corner for his 2nd debut try. Score: 5-29. 10mins later, some great ball carrying by Fred and Jason down the centre creates space for good handling to see Mat.A gas their winger and score, taking his tally now to 4 this season. Conversion took the score to 5-36.

A well worked counter attack by the forwards, as well as strong recycling of the ball sees an offload to ‘French Flair’ Louis to shrug off a tackle to score in the corner. Very soon after, a great rub by Datch over the opposition 22 allows Lalo to score, taking the score to 5-46. Minutes later there was almost a second chance for Lalo as a cross field kick from a penalty saw an awkward bounce for their winger. The poor winger, after collecting this awkward ball, was completely steam trained by Lalo, who probably deserved ‘Bosh of the match’.

Unfortunately the last 5mins saw a heavy period of London Met pressure. But resolute defending on our try line kept London Met at bay. It would have been very easy for the team to let London score again, as it would make little difference to the outcome. But the teams dedication showed, as 2 ‘held-ups’ and 4 penalties denied London Met a try they should have scored.

The final score came just before the final whistle, and was the result of a second Datch run, which lead to a penalty in London’s 22. Quick tap and good hands by Pat, Fred and Lalo see Lalo also score his 4th try of the season. This brought the end of the game and a final score of London Met 5- 51 Kent 3’s.

Although a great score this will probably not be the most satisfying of wins for the 3rd’s, as more points are needed if Goldsmiths are to be caught this season. Even though the 3’s have scored 110 points in the last 2 games, they are still 100 points behind Goldsmiths. A re-shuffling of the back line is never easy to pull off in a game, but the backs managed to have good support play and clever decision making. And the forwards can still pride themselves with being extremely mobile and solid, especially against a side which were constantly infringing in the rucks. Overall a solid win and some good sets of play, keep Kent Men’s 3rd XV in contention at top of the table.
